Manifesto

Who am I?

I’m Aaron Dinkledine, a Christian, a Covenanter, a Reformed Presbyterian, a Christian hedonist, an academic, an engineer, a minimalist, a world traveler, an eccentric, a reader, a writer, a musician, a chef, and occasionally an athlete.

This blog is not, actually, a blog.

Ok, this is technically a blog, but I haven’t taken up regular blogging. I may use the blog function of this site when I see fit, but I have this against blogs: they encourage shallow writing and thus shallow thinking. What is written today will be forgotten tomorrow. Because blog updates quickly become dated and pushed into the archives, the few excellent blog posts are soon buried under tripe. On a molecular scale, single atoms of content flowing across the pages of Facebook and Twitter take this to the extreme. The quantity of words may increase exponentially, but their mass is negligible. If I wanted to build hype, I would write a blog and use Twitter. But I don’t want hype. I want to build lasting, valuable ideas. I want to write like I am writing a book that will be read a thousand years from now. Writing of that quality deserves better than a dated blog post. So I am going to try an experiment. I will use pages instead of posts to publish weighty words of wisdom without an expiration date. For each new page, I will publish a blog post announcement, so that it will be evident there is new content, and then it will show up in the RSS feed.

But it looks like a blog!

I am using the WordPress blog platform to manage my personal website. I have used WordPress in previous projects, and I find it a whole lot easier to set up a simple and polished website on WordPress than by coding HTML from scratch. And frankly, WordPress knocks the socks off other CMS platforms. Plus, I needed a simple way to post my photos and ideas that is under my control to customize as needed, unlike Facebook, which is subject to the whims of one Mark Zuckerberg.

Author’s Guidelines

  • I will submit myself to a conscious effort to glorify God and enjoy him forever.
  • I will not publish weighty words the same day they are written.
  • I will reread and edit weighty words after at least one night’s rest.
  • Even after publication, I will continue to edit my words if I see opportunity for improvement.
  • I may publish announcements or links to other content without waiting a day, but all such content will be posted as blog posts.
  • I will allow comments from readers, but all comments will go directly to me. They will not be published, unless I deem them profitable for other readers.
